This is an optional field that defines the geographic region assigned to customers for gross margin reporting purposes. The term "region" is subjective and is user defined-–it may mean different things to different companies. For companies selling within a local area, for example, a region could be defined as North, South, East, or West; for companies with customers throughout the nation, a region could have a broader meaning-–Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, West, Midwest, etc. or may even choose to define a region by metropolitan areas.
